1. The patient should remain in bed the day of the surgery.
Watch for active, bright red bleeding. Call our office if there are
any questions of active bleeding.
2. Some
patients experience nausea and vomiting as a result of the general
anesthetic. Encourage fluids until the nausea is gone.
3.
Bleeding may occur several days after surgery. Vomiting or spitting up blood can
be serious. The blood
may be either bright red or dark brown. If this occurs contact the
office immediately. If
for any reason you are unable to reach the doctor, go directly to
the emergency room.
4. All during the recovering period, the patient should
drink plenty of clear liquids. Liquids such as apple juice, pop (let
it go flat-without the gas), Kool-Aid, punch and grape juice, ice
cream is all right but ice pops and sherbert is better. Soft foods
can be added whenever the patient is able to tolerate it, but keep
up plenty of fluids. NO
MOTRIN, IBUPROFEN, ADVIL OR ASPIRIN TO BE USED 3 WEEKS AFTER
SURGERY.
5. Swallowing promotes use of
the throat muscles. This will help the throat to recover sooner.
Encourage frequent sips of liquid in order to promote swallowing.
Swallowing will hurt at first, but it will make it much easier to
recover later.
6. Adults and children will have
a prescription for pain medication and a prescription for
antibiotics. Take the
pain medicine as needed. Take the antibiotics as
directed.
7. Try to avoid coughing,
hacking and clearing the throat.
8. An ice collar or cold
compress can be used around the neck if
desired.
9. Mouth odor is
common for several days after the surgery. Fluid intake will
decrease this problem.
10. White or yellow crusting over
the area of the surgery is common. This promotes healing and does
not mean infection.
11. Slight fever up to 101 F is
not uncommon after surgery and during the healing
stage.
12. Ear pain is frequent. This
is referred pain from the tonsil area. Some ear pain may persist
until the area is completely healed (about two
weeks).
13. Activity should be reduced
for two weeks after surgery. Children can return to school
after one week, but
without P.E. class. All
activities may be resumed after 2 weeks.
14. Call the office to
schedule an appointment for two weeks after
surgery.
