1. Tympanoplasty is the
operative procedure to repair the eardrum and repair any damage that
infection has done to the bones of hearing.
2. There is material inside the
ear canal that will dissolve.
3. Immediately after surgery
there may be some bloody discharge from the ear. Some discharge may be
expected until the post-op visit due to the material in the ear
canal and the blood clot from the surgery.
4. You will be discharged from
the hospital after surgery.
5. Keep your head elevated on
two pillows to reduce the swelling and
discomfort.
6. Some nausea may be present
after, usually from the anesthesia. Start with a liquid diet and
progress the diet as you wish to a full diet. Some patients are able to
tolerate a full diet the same evening after the
surgery.
7. Light activity is
permissible after surgery.
Avoid heavy exertion for at least one week. You can return to work as
early as the day after surgery if work does not involve lifting and
exertion.
8. You will be discharged with
a prescription for pain medication and antibiotic drops. Use the pain medication as
necessary. You may
substitute Tylenol for the prescribed medication for
pain.
9. Remove the head dressing on
the day after surgery.
10. Beginning on the day after
surgery start using the antibiotic drops. Place 5 drops in the ear
twice daily. Continue
using the drops for one full month.
11. Remember to keep your ear
dry. Protect the ear
from water with cotton and Vaseline or a baggy over the ear. Avoid a direct stream from
the shower on the ear under any circumstance.
12. Clean the incision behind
the ear with Hydrogen Peroxide. Then cover with Bacitracin
or Neosporin twice daily.
13. Call the office to make an
appointment for one week after the day of
surgery.
14. Avoid blowing the nose or
flying in an airplane for one
month. |
